Lymph oedema  = swelling of lymph

There are two basic types of lymphoedema – primary and secondary.

Primary lymphoedema is believed to be hereditary and is caused by there being a problem with the lymph transport system from birth

Secondary lymphoedema can arise because of damage to the lymphatic system, eg when nodes are removed in surgery or after chemo or radiation treatment for cancer, or when vessels are cut or damaged in trauma or accident.
